LYRICS - BAG LADY

Bag lady you gone hurt your back
Dragging all them bags like that
I guess nobody ever told you
All you must hold on to
Is you, is you, is you

One day all them bags gone get in your way
One day all them bags gone get in your way
I said one day all them bags gone get in your way
One Day all them bags gone get in your way

So pack light
Pack light
Pack light
Ooh ooh

Bag lady you gone miss your bus
You can't hurry up
Cause you got too much stuff
When they see you comin
N***gas take off runnin
From you it's true oh yes they do

One day he gone say you crowdin my space
One day he gone say you crowdin my space
I said one day he gone say you crowdin my space
One day he gone say you crowdin my space

So pack light
Pack light
Pack light
Ooh ooh

Girl I know sometimes it's hard
And we can't let go
Oh when someone hurts you oh so bad inside
You can't deny it you can't stop crying
So oh, oh, oh
If you start breathin
Then you won't believe it
You'll feel so much better
(So much better baby)

Bag lady
Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go
Ooh, ooh
Girl you don't need it
I betcha love can make it better
Betcha love can make it better
Betcha love can make it better
(Need someone to love you right)
Betcha love can make it better
(I betcha love, betcha love)
Betcha love can make it better
Betcha love can make it better
Betcha love can make it better
Betcha love can make it better
(I betcha love, betcha love)
Betcha love can make it better
(I betcha love, I betcha love, oh)
Betcha love can make it better
Betcha love can make it better
(Oh...)
Betcha love can make it better...

Bag lady, hmm
Let it go, let it go, let it go, let it go
Girl you don't need that, hmm

"Is this about materialism?"
-s99bf0c8, 2013
**
"No - the song (in my opinion) is about women and how we should grow up and mature. It is about handling our issues (baggage) that can ultimately destroy our relationships, health, well-being, families, and even how we relate to the world. Our baggage is what keeps us (women) from realizing our full potential and purpose and life. The scene with the babies receiving their bags says it all. We ladies start filling our bags from birth but it is up to us to face our issues and deal with them.
-Blckberi, 2013
**
"the word bags in the song means your personal issues whether issues of past relationship, self esteem issues etc. Wen she says pack light she means dont carry your problems into new relationships or new chapters in your life.. hope dat helped"

"baggage, can be Mental as well. so She is saying let all that
"baggage go" "

"Love this song, leave all your access baggage (issues) in the past"
-pnuttink, 2013
**
"I love this song for many reasons mainly because its the truth baggage keeps you from hurrying up and obtaining all that is for you on your life path. Instead of pointing teh finger check yo bags and get rid of some stuff and mr right, that good job, and happiness and more could be right there stay positive"

INFORMATION ABOUT BILLY STEWART
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Stewart
"Billy Stewart (March 24, 1937 – January 17, 1970) was an American musical artist, with a highly distinctive scat-singing style, who enjoyed popularity in the 1960s...

Rock and roller Bo Diddley has been credited with discovering Stewart playing piano in Washington, D.C. in 1956 and inviting him to be one of his backup musicians.[citation needed]

This led to a recording contract with Diddley's label, Chess Records and Diddley played guitar on Stewart's 1956 recording of "Billy's Blues"...His idiosyncratic improvisational technique of doubling-up, scatting his words and trilling his lips made his style unique in the 1960s.[citation needed]

In 1966, Stewart recorded the LP Unbelievable. The first single released from that album was Stewart's radical interpretation of the George Gershwin song, "Summertime", a Top 10 hit on both the pop and R&B charts."...

[LYRICS]

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...uck
Chuck a-chuck-chuck (huh! yeah!)

A summertime
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin, don't you know my darling, I said a-right now
And the cotton is high
Like-a like-a like-a you're daddy's rich
And your mommy's good-lookin', yeah
So hush, pretty little baby, don't you cry

One of these, one of these, one of these mornings, darlin'
You're gonna rise, you're gonna rise up singin'
Then you'll spread your little wings, your little wings
And-a take to the ska-da-da-da-dy
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... until-a that mornin'
There's nothin' gonna harm you, girl
With Mommy and Daddy standing by, yeah

Pretty little darlin', I said, a-right now
Don't let a tear, don't let a tear, don't let a tear
Little darlin', I said, fall a-from your eyes

So hush, pretty baby
Do-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-on't
You-ooo
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...uck
Chuck a-chuck-chuck

Little darlin' do not let a tear fall-a from your ey-ey-ey-ey-eye
Whoa!

INFORMATION ABOUT CHICAGO STEPPING
From http://thesteadysteppers.com/index.php/about-us/faqs
"What is Stepping?
Stepping is an urban, partnered dance art form that is indigenous to Chicago, Illinois. Steppin’ should not be confused with fraternity and sorority Greek stepping which is very popular on college and university campuses throughout the country.

What are some of the teaching methods of stepping?
For instructional purposes, counting methods (generally 6-count or 8-count) are used to teach synchronized movements during which times partners clasp hands and face each other. Steppin’ is done to smooth sounds of Jazz, Soul, Funk, R&B, or Rap music."...
-snip-
From http://www.rockcityuniquesteppers.com/id13.html
"A Brief History of Steppin'
Steppin' originated in the 1930's as the Jitterbug. By the 1960's it was known as the Bop, which evolved into a unique style of its own called Steppin' – in the city of Chicago. Steppin' developed a phenomenal era of its own; it is not just a dance but the addictive aura of music, smooth moves, stylish dress (reminiscent of the 1920s) and the mood of a by-gone era. Steppin’ is truly a hypnotic work of art and captivates people of all ages and ethnic groups. As the saying goes: “Steppin' is a way of life.”

The suave rhythm of this dance which incorporates gliding, striding and dipping your partner during the 1950's and 1960's eras, to the popular music of young groups – such as the Temptations and other R&B artists – filtrated the African-American community across the United States. From the fashionable clubs (Peps in Philadelphia, Savoy in Chicago, and now at JT's Bourbon St. in Rockford, IL etc.) to the juke joints (speakeasys), Steppin’ – in the guise of the Jitterbug and the Bop – took root and found acceptance in both Black and White communities.

After the fall of the popular Disco era, the Bop was rejuvenated and became known as Steppin'. The emergence of Steppin’ contests and Steppin' Balls became popular, along with music seemingly reserved for Steppin’. Steppin' swept the nation as a dance that not only depended upon smooth moves and creativity but high fashion (chic dress by both the male and female steppers) to complete its ambiance. Steppin' is as much a part of the African-American community's culture and history as is its music from the early days of Jazz, and Rhythm ‘n Blues up to the current style of Soul and Rap music."...

Reply:
"what you say about about the KC 2-step is the "normal" dance convention of mirrored partner dances. The only dance I have done that does not follow it is Argentine tango and Chicago-style stepping. Stepping in Chicago is generally taught Left for follower & right for leader. But, if you dance the way it is shown it will not make a difference! I learned a mirrored stepping originally using conventional starting foot. But, somehow it changed in Chicago. Why???"

Two Online Examples Of Deep House Music Mixes

Posted on 8:41 AM by Unknown
Edited by Azizi Powell

This post presents information about House music & about one of its sub-genres -"Deep House music". This post also showcases one Deep House music mix that was produced by DJ Andylouisoulful and one Deep House Mix that was produced by DJ JaBig.

The content of this post is presented for historical, entertainment, and aesthetic purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

INFORMATION ABOUT THIS MUSIC
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_musichttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music
"House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the American city of Chicago in the early 1980s. It was initially popularized circa 1984 in Chicago, but beginning in 1985, it fanned out to other major cities such as Detroit, Toronto, New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Montreal, Manchester,[1] Miami, London,[1] and Paris. It then began to influence popular music in Europe... Since the early to mid-1990s, house music has been infused in mainstream pop and dance music worldwide.

Early house music was generally dance-based music characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms centered around drum machines,[2] off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized basslines. While house displayed several characteristics similar to disco music, it was more electronic and minimalistic,[2] and the structured music's focus around a repetitive rhythm was more important than the song itself. House music today, while keeping several of these core elements, notably the prominent kick drum on every beat, varies a lot in style and influence, ranging from the soulful and atmospheric deep house to the more minimalistic microhouse. House music has also fused with several other genres creating fusion subgenres,[2] such as Euro house, tech house, and electro house."...
-snip-
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_house
"Deep house is a subgenre of house music that originated in the 1980s, initially fusing elements of Chicago house with 1980s jazz-funk and touches of soul music.

Deep house is known for complex melody, complex chords underlying most sequences, and a soul, ambient, or lounge vibe to the vocals (if any). In the early compositions (1988—89), influences of jazz music were most frequently brought out by using more complex chords than simple triads (7ths, 9ths, 13ths, suspensions, alterations) which are held for many bars and give compositions a slightly dissonant feel. The use of vocals became more common in deep house than in many other forms of house music. Sonic qualities include soulful vocals (if vocals are included), slow and concentrated dissonant melodies, smooth, stylish, and chic demeanor.[citation needed] Deep house music rarely reaches a climax, but lingers on as a comfortable relaxing sound"...
-snip-
The African American English meaning of "deep" is "profound", inspirational". Something that is (or someone who is) "deep" causes us to think; to ponder on "heavy duty" thoughts or matters. And/or something that is (or someone who is "deep" causes us to feel more than we usually feel.

Also, the African American English meaning of the word "dope" [that is found on the mix cover in the 2nd example below along with the word "deep"] is "very good". "Ill" is another African American slang word for "dope" which has the same positive vernacular meaning. Maybe that's because the other form of dope makes you ill. (I'm only being a little bit facetious with that last statement).
-snip-
PLEASE BE AWARE: Some sub-genres of House include profanity and sexually explicit language and sexual explicit visuals [in YouTube mixes.] Also, there are clean and x rated ["dirty house"] versions of some House songs, and some songs that don't have x rated language have sexually suggestive language. Also, be aware that most YouTube video comment threads contain profanity and sexually explicit language.

FEATURED MIXES

Soulful Sounds In Honor Of "Souls To The Polls" Early Voting Efforts

Posted on 4:19 AM by Unknown
Edited by Azizi Powell

This post honors the "Souls To The Polls" early voting efforts by showcasing five musical selections whose titles include the word "soul". Information & comments about "Souls To The Polls" initiatives & a video about the "Souls To The Polls" project in Ohio are also included in this post.

The content of this post is presented for historical, sociological, aesthetic, and entertainment purposes.

All copyrights remain with their owners.

****
COMMENT ABOUT THE USE OF THE WORD "SOULS" IN THE PHRASE "SOULS TO THE POLLS"
"Souls To The Polls" are community specific initiatives to recruit potential voters and help facilitate transportation for those persons who need it so that they can get to early voting locations on those days when such voting is permitted. While these initiatives are primarily church based, participants in "Souls To The Polls" efforts don't have to be members of the church which is sponsoring that particular initiative. Nor do participants have to be members of any church or religious organization.

The title "Souls To The Polls" creatively uses in-rhyming (rhyming withing a phrase) to quickly convey the purpose of that effort. The word "souls" has two meanings in the context of the "Souls To The Polls" initiative. "Souls" has a spiritual meaning, given this initiative's majority sponsorship by churches. Secondly, "soul people" is a familiar colloquial synonym for "Black people". Black people's connection to our soul is said to be reflected in the way we "live, and move, and have our being". The colloquial definition of "soul" meaning "Black folks" fits the "Souls To The Polls" title for these early voting efforts as the majority of those who coordinate "Souls For The Polls" initiatives are African Americans and the majority of the people who participate in "Souls To The Polls" initiatives are African Americans.

In the United States, voting locations are known as "polls".

****
"SOULS to the POLLS" ORIGIN & HISTORY
From http://www.stlsoulstothepolls.org/history.htm.
"The name "SOULS to the POLLS" is taken from a 2008 voting initiative in parts of Florida that allowed citizens to vote the last Sunday before the general election. Pastors would typically emphasize the importance of voting during morning worship and following service, congretants [sic] would collectively sojourn to the polls. According to the NAACP, statistics showed that in the 2008 general election in Florida, 33.2% of those who voted early on the last Sunday before Election Day were African-American, while 23.6% were Hispanic"...

EXCERPT OF AN ARTICLE ABOUT SOULS TO THE POLLS
From http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-10-28/news/os-souls-to-polls-sunday-20121028_1_elections-office-black-churches-orlando-police
"Souls to the Polls carries on Sunday tradition"
7:15 p.m. EST, October 28, 2012|By Jeff Kunerth, Orlando Sentinel

"The line of cars, vans, and church buses backed up for blocks on Kaley Street as hundreds of voters participated Sunday in a Souls to the Polls early-voting event at the Orange County Supervisor of Elections office.

The traditional day for early voting among black churches is the Sunday just before Election Day, but this year the Florida Legislature shortened the number of days for early voting, eliminating that Sunday.

You can take a Sunday away, but you can't take away our vote or our voice," said Bishop Kelvin L. Cobaris, pastor of the Livingston Street Church of God in Orlando.

Cobaris said about 75 members from his church carpooled to the early-voting event, organized by the African American Council of Christian Clergy.

Other churches and community groups participated in a Souls to Polls effort held by the Federation of Congregations United to Serve, a multiracial collective of clergy and congregations in Orange County. Their effort, aimed at black and Hispanic voters in Orlando and Kissimmee, was part of an early-voting effort by PICO United Florida, a statewide network of faith-based federations.

"Across the board, our faith congregations at FOCUS understand the importance of this one Sunday of early voting," said Executive Director Liz Buckley.

Muslim organizations also organized an early-voting drive Sunday in Orlando.

"We want to get them out early and build momentum in the community," said Rasha Mubarak, regional field coordinator for Emerge USA, an Islamic civil-rights organization. "For us, this is very important for us to go out to the polls because of the anti-Islamic rhetoric we have seen in this election."

Orlando police rerouted the procession of vehicles along Kaley down Atlanta Avenue, where people parked and walked to the elections office in dark suits and long dresses, ties and T-shirts, jeans and dress slacks, heels, sandals and sneakers. They walked the narrow path in the grass by a recycling center, across the railroad tracks, and past the political signs that lined the street like a crowd waiting for a parade...

By early evening Sunday, 1,622 people had voted at the Supervisor of Elections office, according to election officials."

Souls To The Polls efforts are also supported by Black fraternity and sorority organizations. The woman wearing a pink tee shirt with green letters who was featured in this article is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

While "Souls To The Polls" efforts are non-partisan, it's likely that the majority of voters -if not all of the voters- who participated in thsse initiatives support the re-election of President Barack Obama.

There are also "Souls To The Polls" early voting efforts in the state of Ohio and in other African American communities throughout the United States where early voting is possible.
Unfortunately, there's no early voting (except for absentee voting under certain conditions) in my state of Pennsylvania.

Lyrics: HOME AGAIN
(Michael Samuel Kiwanuka)

Home again
Home again
One day I know
I'll feel home again
Wrong again
Wrong again
One day I know
I'll feel strong again
And lift my head

Many times
I've been told
All this talk
Will make you old
So, I'll close my eyes
Won't look behind
Movin' on
Movin' on
So I'll close my eyes
Won't look behind
Movin' on

Lost again
Lost again
One day I know
Our paths will cross again
Smile again
Smile again
One day I hope
I'll make you smile again
And I won't hide

Many times
I've been told
Speak your mind, just be bold
So I'll close my eyes
Won't look behind
Movin' on
Movin' on
So, I'll close my eyes
And the tears will clear
Then I'll feel no fear
Then I'd feel no way
Bypass what we made straight

Home again
Home again
One day I know
I'll feel home again
Wrong again
Wrong again
One day I know
I'll feel strong again
And lift my head

Many times
I've been told
All this talk will make you old
So I'll close my eyes
Won't look behind
Movin' on
Movin' on
So I'll close my eyes
Won't look behind
Movin' on
